"Australian Stock Saddle"
Definition: Australian Stock saddles are built for comfort. The seats are deep and usually strung beneath the leather with webbing or string. The blocks below the pommel and on the back of the saddle flaps help keep the rider stay secure while riding up and down steep hills. Some Australian stock saddles have a horn, typically thinner than a Western saddle horn. The Aussie saddles may or may not have an over girth depending on the model.

"Western Reining Saddle"

Definition: Reining saddles feature a flat seat favored by those who ride reining patterns. This Western rein was custom made to fit horse and rider with an eye to keeping the weight as light as possible.​

"Treeless Saddle"

Definition: This treeless saddle has a pommel and cantle made of fibreglass and a seat of leather and foam padding. This particular saddle is very similiar to a bareback pad. This type of saddle is great for a horse who is hard to fit. If your horse has a very wide back or uneven shoulders treeless saddles may be the answer.

Some riders like the close contact provided by treeless saddles, while other may find they miss the twist and shape of a traditional saddle as many treeless saddles make you sit 'wider'. Not all treeless saddles fit all horses (or riders) and when purchasing a saddle it is just as important to 'try before you buy' as with a traditional Western or English saddle.

With this type of saddle it might be wise to use a breast plate (straps that go forward from the front of the saddle around the horse's chest.) to help prevent the saddle from turning.

All Purpose English Saddle"

Definition: The flaps on an all purpose saddle are more generously cut forward to allow for a rider who occasionally wants to to jump. The billet straps are short, unlike a dressage saddle. This is the saddle many riders have if they want to show on the flat and in classes like hunter hack and hunter over fences. It's also suitable for the rider who likes to hack and perhaps pop their horse over a fallen log on the trail.​

Dressage Saddle"

Definition: Dressage saddles have a deep seat and the flaps are cut straight. This designs helps the rider sit deeply in the saddle and provides close contact with the horse. This close contact allows the rider to cue the horse with precision.​

"Forward Seat English Saddle"

Definition: The flaps on a forward seat saddle are cut more generously with a greater curve to the front. The larger flap accomodates the rider's leg as they sit in a two-point position while going over a jump.

"Racing Saddle"

Definition: These racing saddles are for use on Thoroughbred race horses. The inset is an exercise saddle, the larger is an actual race saddle. The race saddle has only one girth strap on each side, compared to a regular English saddle that has two or three. An 'over girth' would be strapped over the seat of the saddle so that it is very secure.

The total width of the saddle from the bottom of each flap and across the seat is 20 inches. They are very tiny and lightweight. The jockey does not sit in the saddle, but stays perched over the horse's shoulders. You might come across a saddle like this at a flea market or auction sale. These saddles are not suitable for general riding.
Examples: The race horse's owner did the final check on the overgirth before the jockey was lifted into the race saddle.​

"Antique Sidesaddle"

Definition: This is an antique sidesaddle. The flat seat and pronounced pommels allow the rider to sit almost sideways. The rider sits facing forward with the right leg hooked over the head, and the left leg sits in the normal position with the foot in a stirrup. This saddle has no "leaping horn" or head. The leaping head allows the rider to balance against the head and provides a more secure seat while jumping.​

Treeless Endurance Saddle"

Definition: Treeless saddles are not built around a wooden or synthetic tree like most saddles are. Treeless saddles have thick pads or panels of leather, vinyl, foam, sheepskin, or fleece. They are made for maximum comfort of both horse and rider. One of their most attractive features is that they fit a wide variety of horses. While this saddle is designed for endurance riders it would be suitable for anyone who enjoys trail riding, or could be used as a schooling saddle outside the show ring.​

Western Saddle

Definition: This western style saddle is a general purpose saddle used for schooling the horse and rider. It is made to help the rider attain the correct leg position to cue their horse while showing in pleasure and equitation classes.​
