The Italian Heavy Draft is one of the fastest of the large work horses.
History
These horses are called TPR's, an abbreviation for Tiro Pesante Rapido, or quick draft horse, in Italy. The breed originates from the mid-19th century when Arabian, Thoroughbred and Hackney blood was used to breed speedier mares. in the 20th century the most important blood has been from the Breton, to which the Italian Heavy Draft now bears great similarity.
The main breeding areas were in the plains and hills around Verona, Padova, Vicenza, Venice, Treviso and Udine. The Italian Heavy Draft was an important breed for Italian farmers because it is large, docile, strong and fast. But today, the tractor has replaced it. The declining numbers of the breed (currently about 1,000 brood mares) are kept mainly for meat.
Breed characteristics
In appearance, the head is relatively long but fine and elegant. The neck is short and crested, the body is broad and deep, and the hindquarters are rounded and muscular. The limbs are muscular and the feet are a little boxy and there is some feather. They most commonly come in liver chestnut, with a flaxen mane and tail, but they can be chestnut or roan. They stand between 15 and 16 hands high.
