The Friesian breed is one of the oldest domesticated breeds in Europe. It is native to the province of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. The Friesian suffered a decline in numbers with the increase of mechanization on the farm and in transportation. In fact, the number of Friesian stallions reputedly was reduced to only three prior to World War I. The breed was rejuvenated by introducing Oldenburg blood. In recent years the breed has attracted a great deal of acclaim and its future seems assured. The Friesian is used for light agricultural work. It is traditionally used in harness to quaint Friesian gigs. The Friesian is also found in circuses and in driving competitions.

Physical Description

One of the outstanding characteristics of the Friesian horse is its very long mane and tail. These are never cut and often reach the ground. The breed also has abundant feather and long leg hair reaching from the middle of the leg. The color is always black, and only a white star in the forehead is permissible. The head of the Friesian is carried quite high and the face is expressive. The neck is carried rather vertically and is low-set. The legs and quarters are muscular yet smooth. It stands at 15 hands and has an excellent disposition.

Origin

The Friesian is an old breed of horse dating from the Middle Ages. Its location of origin is Friesland in the northern Netherlands. The breed nearly died out before World War I and has since been revived as a fine carriage horse. The horse is now being exported to other countries and its popularity is growing.

Notes of Interest

It would be difficult to date the origin of the Friesian horse with precision. It is certain that the horse was well-known in the Middle Ages since it is found in art work of that period. In the 1600's it was adopted to carry heavy weight under saddle. Later, due to its splendid action at the trot, the Friesian was bred to be lighter in weight. This, unfortunately, limited its use in agriculture and led to its decline in the early 1900's. Systematic breeding has restored the breed's quality and its numbers are now increasing.

The Friesian horse is unique, truly a breed to be proud of. It developed from a very old breed which was inherent to all of western Europe. It's the only horse native to Holland. Historically speaking, the Friesian horse has been influenced by eastern bloodlines and has often been threatened with extinction. Thanks to the single-mindedness and dauntless dedication of true horse lovers, one can still appreciate the many facets of the Friesian horse today.

During the Dutch Independence war against Spain, the Friesian performed its duties as a war horse. During this time (mid 1500s to mid 1600s), the Friesian was a heavy draft-like breed. Andalusian horses were bred with the Friesians to lighten the body of the Friesian and added to its distinctly animated trot. This resulted in the warmblood Friesian of today.

The name of the Friesian breed originates from “Friesland” (“Fryslan” in the Friesian language), one of the eleven provinces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, situated in the northwest of Europe. It is an old country, with a history dating back to 500 B.C. The Friesian horse was originally imported to North America in the seventeenth century but the breed was totally lost in North America due to crossbreeding. The Friesian was not reintroduced to North America until 1974. There are currently more than 30,000 Friesians registered worldwide in the Dutch Friesch Paarden Stamboek. Approximately 8,000 of those horses are in North America today.

Characteristics
Without a doubt, the black coat of the Friesian will impress you at first sight. Bays and grays occurred earlier in the breed, but now black is the only recognized color. A small white forehead star is also allowed. The Friesian horse, though well known for its beauty, shining black coat, luxuriant mane, tail and feathering, and powerful, elevated gait, is also beloved for its easy-going temperment and companionable nature. Whether competing in upper level dressage tests, performing on the carriage driving circuit or just going for a trail ride, the Friesian quickly becomes a member of the family.

Registrations
There has often been controversy around the registration of the Friesian horses, due to the high incidence of cross-breeding. The solution was to form two books – the A book for Friesian horses and the B book for crossbreds. In 1913, the “Het Friesche Paard” (The Friesian Horse) society was created. This led to evaluations that were instituted to ensure the breeding of quality horses. Today, the Friese Paarden Stamboek (KFPS) is one of the strictest breed registries in the world; and the future of this unique breed has been assured. FHANA is the North American chapter of the KFPS.

In 1979, a German registry, the FPZV, was created. This registry is generally stallions that have been disapproved by KFPS and were “taken over” by the FPZV. The offspring of these stallions are registered by KFPS in the B-book II. "The differences in breeding goals and selection policies between the KFPS and FPZV are still too big to put the stallions of both studbooks on an equal level,” says KFPS director Ids Hellinga.
Uses
The Friesian horse is enjoying a revival. He is a noteworthy sight in the show ring. His gorgeous features and high action form an imposing image. The Friesian is, by nature, a talented show horse.

Harness Shows & Recreational and Competition Driving
Driving one or more Friesian horses has become increasingly popular in the past few years. Tough international competitions are only for the few, but there are many who derive relaxation and pleasure from driving Friesians for recreation. He who wants to perfect his driving and test his skill against others, can do so at the many dressage driving events. Harness events in shows are usually driven with a high-wheeled gig, the "sjees", for singles, pairs, and tandems. Driving with four-wheeled show carts is also gaining popularity.

Riding
The Friesian horse has a talent for dressage, as well as most other types of riding. The foundation lies in his intelligence, willingness to learn, and readiness to perform. His pleasant character and his gentleness make the Friesian an attractive mount for competition as well as for recreational purposes.
