The French Saddle Pony, also called the Poney Français de Selle, is a relatively new breed, created to fulfill the same role as the British pony or British Riding pony.

History
The breeding process has included cross-breeding native pony mares with Welsh, New Forest (pony), Arab and Connemara Pony stallions, as well as taking Mérens, Basque and Landais mares and cross-breeding these with New Forest (pony), Selle Francais and Connemara pony stallions.

Breed Characteristics
They are versatile and make excellent children's ponies. They have a quiet but lively temperament and are highly attractive. The French Saddle pony has a small, fine head with kind eyes and alert ears. The neck should be of good length and nicely set on, the chest deep and wide, the shoulders sloping, and the legs strong with well-formed joints and hard hooves. The back is straight, the withers developed and the croup sloping, with a well-set tail. They can be any colour and tend to stand between 12.2 and 14.2 hands high.
