Draught horse par excellence whose origins go up with the great “Germanic Race” imported by Burgondes in Ve century. The Eastern standards of Spanish occupying the Franche-Comté bring the distinction to him which always characterizes the race comtoise. Then principal richness of the area, the Comtois horse will be used with fits with body, for the cavalry (dragons), artillery, and with the feature various. Raised in continental zone, to the rigorous climate, Comtois adapts to all the climates. There can remain all the year outside. Still used with traction (unloading of wood, work of the vine), the Comtois horse is also a good leisure and plough horse.
Measuring of 1,55 to 1,65 m, its weight varies from 650 to 800 kg. The balzanes are rare, on the other hand clippings clearly covering the tendons is appreciated. The head is square with the sharp eye, of the small and well planted ears, very mobile. The neck is quite muscular, the well attached garrot. The broad croup with well descended thigh. The articulations must be strong, with good balances, the well detached tendons. Its fabric is dense with dry and well soaked members. Its feet are average and quite formed. Its dress is preferably chestnut horse dark or coppered hairs washed with small a heading by avoiding the broad lists.
