European equine breeding stock, especially on larger stud farms, is/was often marked with brands for the purpose of identification. It concerns mainly the farm where the horse was bred; in which case this particular brand is often placed on the left thigh. This is not a rule, as some stud farms placed their brands in the saddle area or a shoulder. The Kladruby brands the K and the Lipizza the L on the left jaw (cheek). In many warmbloods, in addition to the branding below, the state breeding registry number of a broodmare was often placed on the left side of the neck.

The branding after the sire by the halfbloods is usually placed in the left saddle area showing the brand (letter) of the stallion with the number of the lineage. The consecutive number of a foal after a particular sire is branded in the right saddle area. In many breeding farm the consecutive number also includes the year.

to read the name and placements of the particular brand. See translation below.

By the more widely spread lineages the branding also includes the dam's sire line. For this type of particular branding were setup specific markings. For example a breeding stallion out of a mare by Furioso has under the sire brand the three prong fork like brand, or when out of a mare by Shagya the ring etc.

The particular placement of a brand is described in the pictures and is written in the Czech language. The translation is as follows:
l (lower case L) stands for left
pr. stands for right
stehno stands for thigh
sedlo stands for saddle area
zuchva stands for jaw (cheek)
