While demonstrating Exhibitor Labs’ products at equestrian events around the country, the question I am most often asked is “Which product should I use to give my horse a slick, shiny coat?” Many people are surprised to hear that a winning show coat doesn’t come in a bottle, ours or anyone else’s.

A slick, shiny, show-stopping coat is the result of good health and consistent grooming. If these basics are in place, Exhibitor Labs’ products provide the 'finishing touches' that make your horse look not just good but great.

Good health must always be the foundation of preparing a horse for show. Consult your veterinarian for guidance in establishing a health-care program that includes regular deworming and vaccinations, dental care, and management of any soundness issues your horse may have. Discuss with your farrier the optimal frequency of hoof care for each horse, and whether any special shoes or treatments are needed. A vet or equine nutritionist can assist in assuring that your horse’s diet provides appropriate energy levels and an adequate supply of important vitamins, minerals, and fat.

To get and keep a shiny coat requires a thorough grooming at least every other day, preferably more. Each session should start with a rubber or plastic currycomb, used in a circular motion to remove the excess dirt. A soft curry mitt works well for the face and legs. Then brush the body with a firm-bristle body brush, working in the direction of the hair, to clean the skin and bring up the natural oils. Follow with a soft finishing brush to remove dust and dirt from the surface of the hair. Use only a soft brush on the face. Don't forget to clean the horse's hooves each time you groom.

For maximum return on your efforts, grooming tools need to be clean and in good condition. During grooming, clean the brush every few strokes by wiping it across the currycomb. Clean the currycomb by tapping it on the floor or the heel of your boot. Weekly, or as needed, clean brushes more thoroughly by spraying them lightly with Quic Groom and wiping vigorously on a damp towel. If your horse ever needs treatment for a skin infection, be sure to treat his brushes with the same medication, to prevent reinfection. And finally, recognize when it’s time to retire your brushes—if the bristles are matted, crushed, or missing, they can’t effectively clean and shine your horse.

Depending on the condition of the horse when you start, and the time of year, producing a show-fit coat will take between one and three months of consistent work. It's easier to get a horse looking good in spring and summer than when he’s trying to grow his winter woolies.

Once your horse has a healthy, shiny coat, Quic System grooming products provide the ‘icing on the cake'. Check our web site frequently for ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of some amazing equine makeovers.
