Young driver gets World Cup final wild card

February 26, 2011

Germany's Christian Plücker has received the wild card for the FEI World Cup Final Driving in Leipzig.
The 29 year old four-in-hand driver from Waldeck prevailed over both of the other German candidates, Georg von Stein and Michael Brauchle, in a knock-out competition held at the Federal Training Centre in Warendorf. The contest in Warendorf was held just like an international driving competition, including vet check and speed competition with obstacles.
"It was very important to us that we make the decision for the only German wild card over a sporting competition and then also to have a clear result," said Ewald Meier, the German four-in-hand driving national trainer. Christian Plücker was the fastest driver in the competition which was monitored by the international judge Dr. Klaus Christ.
Plücker's occupation is master baker and he is the son of the formerly successful driver Walter Plücker. He has been driving four-in-hand since the year 2004 and has been a member of the German Championship squad since 2007. Christian Plücker won the silver medal at the German Championships 2010 and was a competitor at the World Championships 2008 in Beesd (NED). Michael Freund is his trainer.
"Five World Champions will be starting in Leipzig which is something you don't have every day," said Plücker, who is excited about the challenge. "I know from Christian Sandmann that Leipzig is always a gigantic competition."
With Plücker the field is now complete for the FEI World Cup Final. The World Champion and titleholder Boyd Exell (AUS), the team World Champion Ijsbrand Chardon and Koos de Ronde (NED), the former World Champion Werner Ulrich (SUI) and Tomas Eriksson (SWE) and the Hungarian driver Josef Dobrovitz have qualified over the seven stages. The first decision in the FEI World Cup Driving in Leipzig will be made on Friday, 29 April, after 9:45 pm in the welcome competition, an international speed competition with obstacles. The FEI World Cup Final presented by Sparkasse will take place as a speed competition with obstacles over two rounds on Sunday, the 1 May.
