Your child may make you feel pressured to buy a pony right now. Take your time, look at as many as you can. Satisfy yourself that you've chosen the right pony. Before you buy:
A.

* Go back for a second (or more) look and take someone knowledgeable with you. The best choice would be your child's instructor.

* If you look at ten ponies, your child will want every one of them. Only take your child with you after you've narrowed down your choices.

* When you do take your child to see a pony, have them try everything from cleaning out hooves to riding as they would in their home environment. Again, this is a good time to take an instructor or someone who is familiar with your child's skill level.

* Ask the seller if they would agree to a trial period. This will give you and your child's instructor time to see if the pony is truly suitable without your having to make a commitment.

* Arrange for a pre-purchase exam. If the pony has any unsoundness issues ask how this will affect his usefulness and quality of life.
Have the veterinarian confirm the pony's age. Remember younger is not necessarily better.
