What Can a Pre-purchase Exam Tell Me?

If you are buying your first horse a pre-purchase exam you may decide to have a veterinarian do a pre-purchase exam. A veterinarian will examine the horse thoroughly and tell you of any potential problems. They should be able to tell you whether a slight chronic condition will make the horse unusable and assess present health.

If the horse has a slight unsoundness they will be able to tell you what it will take to maintain the horse properly. From the vets findings you can decide whether or not the horse will be able to do the work you plan for it.

A pre-purchase exam is not a guarantee of future health or soundness. There are some conditions that can not be found in a pre-puchase exam unless you are willing to pay for things like MRIs. Horses can pick up viruses, colic, or hurt themselves.
You may change the intensity of the horse's workload and that can affect soundness.

Because your horse has passed a veterinarian exam doesn't mean that nothing will happen. A vet won't be able to predict absolutely whether the horse will remain healthy or sound. But they can give you an accurate picture of the horse's or pony's health and soundness at the time of the exam.
