West Virginia Man Faces Cruelty Charges

A West Virginia man is facing multiple animal cruelty charges in connection with the alleged maltreatment of horses on his Greenbrier County farm.
Greenbrier County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Kirby Hanson said that last week after responding to a tip about a downed horse, law enforcement officers discovered between 31 and 32 horse carcasses on a 300-acre farm belonging to Grady Whitlock. The shallow graves of several other animals also were found on the property.
Between 75 and 90 live horses, including several pregnant mares and four stallions, also were found residing on the farm, Hanson said.
"All the horses appear to be malnourished," Hanson said.
County animal welfare authorities are currently seeking custody of the live animals.
Hanson said deputies later discovered the carcasses of another six horses on a nearby property also owned by Whitlock. Carcasses of other animals, including cattle, were found on that property.
Whitlock was later charged with two counts of animal cruelty. He is free on a personal recognizance bond, Hanson said.
"The investigation is ongoing and further charges could be pending," said Hanson.
Whitlock was unavailable for comment.
Meanwhile, Hanson said law enforcement authorities in two nearby counties are conducting similar investigations at properties Whitlock owns there.
