Comment on the quake

The first three horse events have fallen victim to Canterbury's massive earthquake on Tuesday.
The Canterbury Eventing Competition scheduled for this weekend at McLean's Island, northwest of Christchurch, has been cancelled.
Equestrian Sports New Zealand chief executive Jim Ellis told Horsetalk the National Equestrian Centre at McLean's Island escaped damage in the magnitude-6.3 quake.
"It is undamaged, has power and water, and is available for anyone in the region needing horse accommodation and camping for themselves," he said. Details are provided below.
The two other cancellations reported so far are the White Horse Cowboy Challenge, which was such a success last year.
Organiser Jodi Payne said the event was being cancelled out of respect to those affected by the earthquake.
The event, which tests the versatility and team work of horses and riders in a series of skill tests, was to have been held in Geraldine on Saturday.
The New Zealand Riding Pony Society said its show, scheduled for this Saturday at the Courtney A&P Showgrounds, has also been axed.
