Therapy horses perish in stable fire

February 24, 2011

Six horses used in therapy work have died in a Missouri barn fire.
Sugar Creek Equinapy intends to bounce back from the blaze, which cost them the six horses, equipment and part of their facility at Pine Dell Farm.
The wind-fanned fire broke out early on February 20, destroying a barn and an attached apartment, from which two occupants escaped.
Five horses and a miniature donkey survived as they were on pasture at the time.
Sugar Creek Equinapy was hoping to find a temporary facility to continue lessons for the riders that use its services.
The lost horses were an essential part of its programme to help disabled children and young people with disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy.
On its website, it said its barn would not be salvageable.
"We also lost our tack, trailer, feed, grooming stalls and equipment, office equipment and storage. However, most unfortunately, we lost six wonderful therapeutic horses.
"We ask for your prayers and support. We do have grief counsellors available for our special needs riders as they deal with the loss of their beloved equine friends.
"We will post information about our riding program later as we create a recovery plan."
