Snow hinders feed delivery, collapses barn roofs

February 11, 2011

Volunteers with the Beartooth Humane Alliance braved a winter storm in Montana to get hay to 60 horses in need of feed on a Carbon County Property.
Nearly 30 tonnes of hay has been donated to help the animals, but a winter blast prevented trucks getting through to the animals, local media reported.
Beartooth Humane Society supporters who lived much closer to the horses were able to get through on the icy, snow-covered roads with enough hay until conditions improved enough to allow the trucks through.
Meanwhile, in Tolland, Connecticut, five horses escaped injury when the roof of their barn collapsed under a heavy snow burden.
The collapse occurred on Mile Hill Road on around 3pm on Wednesday, temporarily trapping one of the horses. Heavy equipment was needed to free it.
Another barn roof collapsed under snow in Canaan, New Hampshire, the same afternoon, leaving two horses in need of rescue.
One of the two trapped Belgian drafts escaped under its own steam as rescue personnel arrived. The other required the help of firemen, the property owner and police to be freed.
