Ramont off to good start at NZ jumping champs

February 12, 2011

Billy Ramont's National Championships bid got under way in style yesterday, with the Australian leading the field in the Senior Horse Grand Prix going into the second day of competition.
Held at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island, the field in the first round of the premier event against the clock (where rails are converted to seconds) was reduced to just four after three scratchings. First out, local hope Chris Harris and Zilco Te Peka Luciano put in a top-class performance to go clear, finishing on 83.27, to hold second. Ramont and Nicalette NZPH were next to go producing a lovely clear round to take the lead on 81.1. He lies third on his second ride Stardom, with Wellington's Adrian Bruce and Witheze, fourth.
Taranaki's Matthew Dickey and Kiwi Guard made the best possible start in the One Star Grand Prix, sitting in pole position on 78.99 despite having a rail down. Tauranga's Sally Steiner on Wickliffe Brannigan is second on 80.36 after producing the only clear round, with Vicki Wilson and Showtym Girl third on 80.38.
In the day's feature class Kaiapoi teen Katie Meredith notched up the biggest win of her career in winning the Young Rider Series.
Meredith put in her best performance of the season to win the 11-strong class aboard the 11-year-old Streetwise. One of only three clear rounds through to the jump off, Meredith had the advantage of being last to go in the feature class of the first day of competition.
Stephanie Anderson and I Reckon were first to go in the jump-off, taking one rail to finish on four faults. Second out was defending champion and current national young rider series leader Danielle Maurer on her stunning crossbred Blue Rinse, who jumped clear in a time of 44.66. Meredith, who nothing to lose, came out flying, going clear in 41.6 to take the win.
"It's a great thrill. It was a huge track and the biggest I have ever jumped," said an elated Meredith afterwards.
The Junior Rider series went to West Melton youngster Harry Feast riding Critter, scoring the biggest win of his short career taking the honours with the only clear round of the competition.
The hotly contested Amateur Rider Series went to Gisborne's Merrin Hain on the 10-year-old Untouchable. One of seven clear rounds to go through to jump off Hain produced a second foot-perfect round, stopping the clock in 41.65, to win ahead of Genevieve Scott on Vermont.
The age group series classes were well supported with strong fields throughout. Burnham's Ross Smith continued his good run of form with the Cassini 1 stallion Quite Cassini, taking the honours in the Seven Year Old Championship Breeding series after producing two clear rounds, stopping the clock in 41.44 in the jump off. This was well clear of Claudia Hay on Euro Sport Heartbreaker, who stopped the clock at 45.13 to finish second.
Competition was tight in the Six Year Old Championship Breeding Series with Billy Ramont guiding Romeo NZPH to eventual honours with the fastest time in the jump off.
The Five Year Old Championship Breeding Series went to Kurow's Kate Taylor on her homebred mare Landzone with two clear rounds.
