The Prix du Jockey Club is a Group 1 flat horse race in France for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is raced over a distance of 2,100 meters (approximately 1 mile 2½ furlongs) at Chantilly Racecourse in early June. Organized by France Galop, it is one of the French racing season's four Classic Races.
The Prix du Jockey Club was first run in 1836 and is the French equivalent of England's Epsom Derby. The race was reduced from 2,400 metres (1 mile 4 furlongs) to its present distance in 2005. With the sponsorship of Mitsubishi Motors, the race currently offers the second-largest purse in French flat racing. As such, the race attracts the country's top three-year-old horses. Successful horses who have competed in mid-May's Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches frequently enter the Prix du Jockey Club.
Since the creation of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1920, nine Prix du Jockey Club winners have gone on to win the "Arc" against older horses. They are: Ksar (1921), Mon Talisman (1927), Le Pacha (1941), Verso II (1943), Ardan (1944), Suave Dancer (1991), Peintre Celebre (1997), Montjeu (1999) and Dalakhani (2003).
Records
Only Le Pacha in 1941 and Peintre Celebre in 1997 have won the Prix du Jockey Club, the Grand Prix de Paris, and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the three races that since 1920 make up all of the French Classic Races open to colts.
