Pickens welcomes wild horse budget cut

February 19, 2011

Wild horse advocate Madeleine says she hopes a vote by Congress to cut the Bureau of Land Management's wild horse and burro budget by $US2 million will send a clear message to the agency over its treatment of mustangs.
Pickens has been talking to the bureau over her plans to create a reserve for some of the captive wild horses, which now number close to 40,000.
Congress this week passed a voice vote to cut the budget, with Indiana Republican Dan Burton saying his amendment was intended to let the agency know that most Americans wanted mustangs treated more humanely on public lands.
"This is huge news," said Pickens, "and is sure to send a message to agency officials that the American people will not let their actions go unnoticed."
