Neglect charges laid over dead horses

February 12, 2011

A man has been charged with animal cruelty in connection with dead horses found on a farm in West Virginia.
Earlier news video:

The number of animals found dead on the property now totals 28, and local police have charged Grady Whitlock, 83, of Raleigh County, with two counts alleging animal neglect.
The police case is that the horses died from starvation.
Whitlock is on bail on the misdemeanour charges.
Authorities first went to the 300-acre farm on Wednesday after a tip that a dead horse could be seen from the road.
Ongoing investigations have since uncovered the 28 bodies on the farm in Greenbrier County.
Local police estimate there are up to 100 horses on the farm and arrangements were being made to feed the animals.
West Virginia's agriculture commissioner, Gus Douglass, has dispatched a team from his department to ensure the carcasses were disposed of properly to protect the environment and the health of other animals.
He said: "It seems we're seeing more of these incidents in recent years - particularly with horses - and I find that very distressing.
"Farmers have a moral obligation to care for their animals, and the vast majority of them do so. But there are a few that, for whatever reason, fall short of those responsibilities."
