National showjumping champs this weekend

February 10, 2011
A huge North Island contingent has converged on McLeans Island for the National Showjumping and Show Hunter Championships, which get under way tomorrow.

Although defending champion Katie McVean and Delphi will be missing, the competition has attracted many North Islanders vying for national honours against the best combinations the south has to offer.
Christchurch's Chris Harris on the evergreen Zilco Te Peka Luciano will hold the hopes of the South Island in the show's premier event, the Senior Horse Grand Prix. Harris comes into the competition on the back of an unbeatable season, currently leading the national Cathay Pacific Series.
He will face some stiff opposition though from North Islanders Philip Steiner (Tauranga) on Annandale Online NZPH, who finished runner-up in the NZ FEI World Cup series, World Cup round winner Ike Unsworth (Tauranga) on Seremonie VDL, and Adrian Bruce on Witheze and the imported stallion Corofino II with whom he won the Mills Reef Winery Classic at the Tauranga Show Jumping Championships just last week.
Also starting is Australian Billy Ramont, who finished runner-up in the Australia FEI World cup league, riding his own Stardom, and Nicalette NZPH. Nicalette was third last year in the hands of Anna Trent behind McVean's pair Delphi and Daffodil.
Harris is also one of the South Island's leading hopes for glory in the One Star Grand Prix with the talented imported mare Lindis Lara I. It will be one of the hardest competitions to pick with 19 starters, including the current national Young Rider Series leaders Dani Maurer and Blue Rinse, last year's Young Rider of the Year Carissa McGregor (Christchurch) and Chatterton, last year's runner-up Vicki Wilson (Whangarei) and Showtym Girl, coming up against Burnham's Ross Smith with the super-impressive young stallion Quite Cassini, to name a few.
The Pony Grand Prix, South Island Young Rider, Junior Rider, Amateur Rider series, and all the age group series classes have also attracted strong fields with several North Island competitors.
Tim Finch, who is currently leading the national IverQuantel Amateur series, is down from Waipukurau to compete with Mr Munga 3, as is Pony Grand Prix series leader Logan Massie and his talented pony Kickin The Clouds.
Hosted by the South Island Show Jumping Committee on behalf of the seven areas in the South Island, the event will take place at the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island, with the competition running over three days. International course designer John Vallance has been tasked with course designing in ring one.
The Young Rider, Amateur, Junior and age group series classes are all held on Friday along with the first rounds for the championship classes. In the championship classes, all three days count, building up to the finals on Sunday. Pony rides, refreshments and a trade alley are available on site. Entry to the grounds is free.
