More hay airlifted onto Montana ranch

February 17, 2011

More hay has been airlifted to horses in the remote reaches of a large Montana ranch, where authorities stepped in to ensure the wellbeing of up to 700 horses.
The horses are roaming on about 40,000 acres, and their numbers are estimated at between 350 and 700.
The animals are scattered widely over the former Leachman Cattle Co. Home Place Ranch, surrounding ranches, and Crow Tribal lands.
The Leachman ranch was sold in a federal foreclosure sale last year, but the horses have remained.
Authorities, concerned over their wellbeing in the depths of winter, stepped in to ensure the animals received adequate nourishment.
Billingsgazette.com reports that a helicopter from Billings Flying Service flew a further 14 round bales of hay to horses in remoter parts of the ranch on Tuesday.
It reported that the US Bureau of Indian Affairs was moving closer to rounding up the horses and moving them off reservation land. The animals may be sold this northern spring, but some legal clarifications are being sought.
The bureau is seeking bids to capture, treat and transport the horses.
