Man wanted for horse shooting caught after two years

February 14, 2011

A man alleged to have fatally shot a Belgian draft horse between the eyes with a shotgun in 2008 has been arrested by police in Indiana.
John Skomac, 27, fled on foot through nearly a metre of snow when confronted by police, but was apprehended following a chase over about 800 metres.
Skomac, who is alleged to have fatally shot a well-known local draft horse named Ben after a deer-hunting trip proved fruitless, was caught last Wednesday.
Skomac is alleged to have been with another man one night in December 2008 on a deer-hunting trip when they saw Ben illuminated by the light from a barn.
Ben was only a sort distance from the boundary fence when Skomac is alleged to have fired the fatal blast.
Both men were taken into custody and the co-offender subsequently dealt with - he got 30 days in jail and was ordered to pay $US18,000 in compensation - but Skomac failed to appear in court after getting bail.
The shooting of Ben, a popular carriage horse in the community, made headlines and ultimately resulted in what became known as Ben's Law.
The legislation, promoted by state Senator Jim Arnold, D-La Porte, now makes killing a domestic animal a Class D felony in Indiana, provided it is intentional and the animal is not on the loose.
