If you decide to have pre-purchase veterinary exam for the horse, have it done before the sale is finalized. This should be done within a reasonable time frame. It is not fair to the owner to hold up the sale, especially if there is another prospective buyer.
You should get a bill of sale. Contracts that allow the pervious owner to have any control over the horse or contain unreasonable buy back clauses should be avoided. Most contracts of this type are designed to benefit the seller. You should be able to use or sell your horse in anyway you choose or keep your horse anywhere you like.
Any agreements to a trial period or an exchange if the horse is unsuitable should be included in the bill of sale.
When you finally find the perfect horse you will need to make arrangements to get it to its new home. The present owner may be able to provide trailering or you will have to find transportation. In either case be prepared to pay a hook-up and mileage fee.
