Horse Workshops to Cover Breeding, Forage Production

The Purdue University Extension and Historic Prophetstown will jointly sponsor workshops throughout the year for those interested in learning more about horse breeding, forage production, and driving.
Three horse reproduction clinics will be offered Feb. 18-19, March 4-5, and March 12-13 at RX Acres Belgians breeding farm in Brookston, Ind., The clinics will cover topics such as horse health, reproductive anatomy, and stallion and mare management. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in activities such as stallion collection, mare palpation, and ultrasound procedures. Meals will be provided.
"These experiences, combined with informative educational lectures and discussions, will provide learning to the horse industry that neither of these organizations can completely provide on their own," said Purdue horse extension specialist Mark Russell, MS, PhD. "By combining the resources of these two horse educational resources, we hope to support and encourage better horse breeding and management in the draft horse industry and the horse industry broadly."
Historic Prophetstown also will offer horse driving workshops, a horse forage clinic, and an advanced horse driving workshop.
The horse driving workshops will be May 7-8 and Sept. 3-4 at Historic Prophetstown in Battle Ground, Ind. Participants, whether beginners or experienced, will learn how to drive a team of Belgian draft horses in a farm setting.
A horse forage clinic will be July 30-31. Participants must have advanced driving skills to attend. Attendees will learn how to harvest hay efficiently, use the latest horse hay equipment and learn how to make hay without crimping it.
The advanced horse driving workshop will be Oct. 22-23 and will cover topics such as farming techniques and equipment. Participants are expected to know how to harness, hitch to a machine, and be comfortable with basic driving commands.
