Hit-and-run driver injures two riders, kills horse

Police in North Carolina are hunting a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a horse and left its two riders lying on the road.

The accident happened nearly Cherryville around 1.45am on Sunday.
The victims hurt in the accident were named as James Cody Burke, 24, of 317 South Pink Street, Cherryville, and Carlee Jones, 22, of 1450 Kendrick Road in Gastonia.
The pair were taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby. The extent of their injuries is unclear.
Burke and Jones had ridden their horse to Walmart on North Carolinea Highway 150 in Cherryville.
They were on their return journey at the time of the accident, according to Highway Patrol Trooper Frank O'Dell.
The pair had stopped to talk to a friend who driving by in a Ford Mustang on Hephzibah Church Road, near the intersection with Whitesides Road.
A vehicle heading east on the road struck and killed the horse, knocking Burke and Jones on to the road.
O'Dell said it also swiped the rear left portion of the Ford Mustang.
The offender sped from the scene.
Eyewitness report suggest the driver may have been speeding on the winding road.
Pieces of the hit-and-run vehicle, described as a smaller car, were found at the scene and would be useful in identifying it.
