Eventing season gets under way in Canterbury

February 22, 2011

Top level eventing returns to the Sheds NZ National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island this weekend with the first Eventing Canterbury One Day Horse Trial of the autumn season.
The event boasts a strong line-up across all levels. For many, including several of the South Island's leading combinations, it marks an eagerly awaited start to the autumn season, building up to the South Island Three Day Event at McLeans Island in April, followed by the National Three Day Event at Taupo in May.
Also up for grabs are points on the national series at Amateur, Junior and Young rider level, and the NRM South Island Young Eventer Accumulator, which is a graded points system awarded to all young riders competing in graded class across all ESNZ South Island events. It started in the spring and culminates at the South Island Three Day Event.
The Advanced class has attracted five starters vying for the prestigious Atlantic Silver Stirrups Trophy. They include current National One Day Advanced Eventing Champion and NZ Trans Tasman squad member Brent Jury aboard SE Big. He will face some stiff competition from international riders Annabel Wigley, who is stepping out on Enzo, as well as Emily Cammock (nee Butcher) on Dambala, and Alice Montgomery on the wonderful Gordon. Lauren Enright will also made the long trip up from Dunedin to compete on Puss N Boots.
Fresh from her CCI1-star victory at the Puhinui International Three Day Event in December, West Melton's Kate Cavanagh heads the eight-strong line-up in the Open Intermediate (Holmslee Cup) with Gibraltar Rock. The class includes Wigley, who is likely to be competitive with both Frog Rock and Brogan, as well as current Eventing NZ Junior Rider Series leader Kate Mackie on Zambessi and third placed James Avery on Amarillo.
Twelve will start in the Open Novice, which should be a hotly contested affair with the Randwick Trophy up for grabs, while more than 40 riders will start across the two Bomac-sponsored Pre Novice classes. It is also the first event of the new Winslow Feeds and Nutrition Pre Novice Autumn Accumulator challenge, which will run through to and including the South Island Three Day Event.
The two training divisions have attracted close to 50 starters, with more than 30 to line-up at pre-training level.
The equestrian action will get under way at the Sheds NZ NEC McLeans Island, 15 minutes from Christchurch city, with the dressage starting at 8.30am. The show jumping is scheduled to start at 10.30 with Pre Training, followed (in order) by Training, Advanced, Intermediate, Novice and Pre Novice, while the Advanced will be the first out on the Stephen Montgomery-designed cross country at 11am.
