The Colonial Spanish is a horse breed descended from the original Spanish stock brought to the Americas. The breed encompasses many strains found in North America. Its status is considered critical[citation needed] and the horses are registered by several authorites.
In the 1800s, the Iroquois used the Colonial Spanish horse mainly for scouts in times of war in order to keep more foot warriors in defense or in battle, whereas other American Indian tribes would use them primarily for battle.
