Classy win but no title for Ramont

February 14, 2011

Australian Billy Ramont celebrated his birthday in style, taking the honours in the Senior Horse Grand Prix at the National Show Jumping Championships in Christchurch yesterday.
Ramont and nine-year-old mare Nicalette produced two outstanding clear rounds to finish on their overnight score of four faults - dropping just one rail over the entire competition.
Ramont and Nicalette came into the final day of competition in pole position with three rails in hand over Christchurch's Chris Harris on Zilco Te Peka Luciano. Reduced to just the four starters after a number of scratchings, action was tough in the first round with Nicalette the only horse to jump clear over the big John Vallance-designed track. Ramont had one rail down with his second ride Stardom, while Harris on Luciano also picked up an unlucky rail at the last fence. Wellington's Adrian Bruce and Witheze were eliminated.
Both Stardom and Luciano went clear in the second round, but it wasn't enough to trouble Ramont and Nicalette, who were in a class of their own.
"It was a super win, she really tried her heart out today. I have never known a horse that tries so hard," said Ramont.
Although Ramont won the class, he was unable to take the New Zealand title and the coveted Rutherford cup, which went to Harris as the first Kiwi home.
"What a clayton's way to win but I'm happy to take it," said Harris. There was no ill-feeling.
"That's just the way it is. Those are the rules. I still won it," added Ramont.
The One Star Grand Prix came down to the wire, with Auckland young rider Danielle Maurer and Blue Rinse coming out on top after three gruelling days of competition.
Just 14 of the original 18 starters lined up on day three. Overnight leader Matthew Dickey on Kiwi Guard had a round he'd probably rather forget in the first, racking up 20 faults to drop him out of contention. Maurer and Blue Rinse started the second round with a rail in hand after both Sally Steiner on Annandale Wickliffe Brannigan and Vicki Wilson on Showtym Girl jumped clear. She had a few nervous moments, but rose to the occasion, notching up the biggest win in her career. The win went some way to making up for her finishing second in the Young Rider Series on the first day of competition. Steiner took second, with Wilson third and fourth with Showtym Girl and Wurlitzer respectively.
Dannevirke teen Logan Massie won the Open Pony Grand Prix on Kickin The Clouds, picking up just one time fault throughout the competition. Emily Fraser on Tony Pony jumped two super rounds to move up to second, with Ashburton's Lucinda Askin and Totem third.
Phillip Steiner and Annandale Waitangi Triple X took out the 1.20m NZ Championship, while the 1.10m NZ Championship was taken out by Prebbleton's Jessica Williamson and Bellwood Casanova. Ashburton's Lucinda Askin won the 1.10m Pony Championship.
