Christchurch's Chris Harris has continued his run of good form, scoring a handsome victory in the premier class at the Ashburton Area ESNZ One Star Show Jumping and Show Hunter Show yesterday.

Fresh from victory at the South Island Championships last weekend, Harris and the ultra-talented imported mare Lindis Lara I produced the only double clear round to take out the Cathay Pacific Grand Prix. Emma Power and Londgridge Maverick took second after an unlucky rail at the last fence in the second round to finish on four faults, having gone clear in the first. Ashburton's Susie Hayward on her imported stallion Andretti had to settle for third on 10 faults.
The pony grand prix yielded one of the best competitions of the day with the honours going to Ashburton teen Lucinda Askin aboard Bruno Rossi. There were four clears in the first round, with just Askin and the ultra-consistent Becky Harkerss and Brooklee Smallchange leaving all the poles intact to go through to the jump off.
Askin was first to go, jumping clear in a time of 44.36 to take the win. Harkerss went for time and had it in the bag right until the last fence. She finished faster with 36.52 but paid the price for a rail, finishing second. Fellow local Kimberly Bird and Showtym Image took third, the fastest of the four faulters in the first round.
Christchurch's Stacey Anderson and Saddlery Barn Cruiser took out the Ashburton Toyota Mitavite South Island Series Young Rider Class on the first day of competition. One of only two clear rounds, Anderson faced Brad Cunningham and Cheltenham in the jump off, a clear round sealing her first young rider win of the season.
The Iver Quantel Amateur Series went to Louise Marriot and Matilda II, having earlier finished first equal in the Mitavite Six Year Old Series class with Brad Cunningham aboard Cessna. Georgie Pinckey and Whinnie The Who further improved their standings by taking out the KiwiSpan Junior Rider Series.
Now all eyes will be on the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island for the NZ National Show Jumping and Show Hunter Championships, which get under way on Friday. The event is the South Island's most prestigious and has attracted huge entries, including more than 70 combinations making the trip south from the North Island to compete.
