Choppers circle as horse saved in dramatic rescue

February 18, 2011

Choppers were circling overhead but there was little they could do as Sugar swum desperately for her life in a Phoenix canal.

Eden Chinchilla leads his horse, Sugar, away from the canal, in the video below.
It took six people with a rope and a tractor with a front-end loader to haul the three-year-old palomino out of the canal in Phoenix, Arizona.
Website Phoenix News, Arizona News and Local Weather from KPHO CBS 5 News reported on the dramatic rescue of Sugar, who was spooked during a regular walk with his rider, Eden Chinchilla, 14, alongside the canal on Wednesday evening.
"She got scared and she backed up and we fell in the canal together," Chinchilla told the station.
Chinchilla got free from his horse as they swam for their lives in the two-metre deep water. Ten minutes later, Chinchilla was out of the water and working hard to hold Sugar's head above water.
Circling choppers signalled help was on its way.
The arrival of the front-end loader meant a fire crew and police could then move to haul Sugar on to the bank, at 75th Avenue and Camelback Road.
Sugar was able to walk home, before receiving some oats. It was then off to a veterinary hospital to tend her injuries.
Her legs and belly were badly scraped but x-rays revealed no breaks, with a full recovery likely.
