Charity moves urgently to help starving Egyptian horses

The Brooke, a charity which helps working equines around the world, is moving urgently to help tourist horses starving to death in Egypt.
Harrowing pictures emerged this week of dead horses around Nazlet Al-Saman, about 25 kilometres from Cairo. The images showed others still alive, but in dire need of food.
The animals are used to carry tourists and their owners rely on that income to feed the animals.
Tourists have fled the nation amid an anti-government uprising, which is into its third week, and which is widely predicted to result in President Hosni Mubarak stepping down today.
The Brooke said it was urgently following up on reports of the starving and dead horses.
Nasser Hosny, country manager for the Brooke, said the charity was deeply concerned by the reports and a vet team was in the area to investigate and address the problems as best they could.
"Many of the roads have been closed around Cairo and owners may not have been able to reach the horses," he said.
"Or they may have run out of money to feed their families and abandoned the horses."
The Brooke says its Cairo clinic remains open, despite the massive protests.
Staff continue to provide treatment for animals requiring emergency care.
