Captured wild horse had gunshot wound

February 12, 2011

A horse captured in a federal muster in northern Nevada had a gunshot wound to its shoulder, authorities reveal.
The Bureau of Land Management is investigating following the discovery of the wound in the wild horse, which was gathered as part of the muster of about 2000 horses in the Antelope Complex.
The bureau said the horse had been captured on Thursday, and was found to have a puncture wound in her upper left leg.
The animal was transported to the gather holding facility and placed in a separate pen from the other gathered horses and monitored closely by the on-site veterinarian.
On Friday morning the mare spun around in the corral and broke her front left leg.
She was euthanised as a result.
On closer examination, the vet determined the puncture wound was actually a gunshot wound, and was a major contributing factor to the break.
Bureau law enforcement rangers have started an investigation.
To date, 571 wild horses have been gathered, with the target being 1917 to 2278 animals.
The Antelope Complex is about 90 kilometres south of Wells, Nevada.
The bureau says there are currently an estimated 2705 wild horses within the complex, where the appropriate management level is 427-788 animals.
